Youth Violence Prevention Research Study
Violence is seen by far too many young people as a way to solve problems. Violence creates personal and institutional problems that are all too familiar—anger, fear, retaliation, bloodshed, and even death. Violence breeds poverty, dampens motivation, affects the success of our school system, and has a negative impact the economic vitality of our city.

This summer Youth United will be conducting a research study entitled “Social Support Networks as Protective Factors in Preventing Youth Violence” with youth in several Nashville neighborhoods. We would like YOU to help us by participating in this study.

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of students’ social networks on risk for interpersonal violence. Participation in the study will require each youth to participate in a small group of 10-12 other youth where they will be asked to complete two short surveys and a map that identifies how far away from their house persons in their social network live. The total amount of time to complete the study is estimated at about one hour. Two trained research assistants will be available to help youth complete the activities. Once the distances are calculated, any personal identifying information will be destroyed so that all information will be completely anonymous.

Participants under 18 years of age must have a signed parental consent form in order to participate. All participants will be compensated with a $20 gift certificate for their participation.

Sessions will be conducted on the following dates/times:

Saturday, July 18th - 12pm

Wednesday, July 22nd - 2pm

Thursday, July 23rd - 6pm

All sessions will take place at the Youth Opportunity Center - 1704 Charlotte Pk. Suite 200
