What type of music do you like? Do you have one set genre that you listen to, rap, pop, rock, country, heavy metal, jazz, hip hop, or any others that are out there? Or maybe your like me, and you like to listen to a little bit of everything. Well, you might not know this, but the type of music you listen to tells a lot about your personality.
According to the music personality test, there are robust relationships between personality and music preferences. This doesn’t mean that just because you listen to certain type of music you act a certain way, but instead, it means that people who like one style of music, more often than not, display similar personality characteristics. For example, North and Hargreaves found that people use music as a “badge” to communicate their values, attitudes, and self-views. So if people like the same music they might be communicating similar values and attitudes.
The music you listen to can also bend and shape your views about life and other important issues. According to the Loyola University study on music-personality correlations it showed that people who often listen to heavy-metal or rap probably view the opposite sex in a different way than people who listen to pop or country. This may have to do with the difference in lyrics and or themes. The study also showed that different types of music can alter your mood.
So, the next time you turn on your ipod or mp3 player think about what your music says about you.
